"Human rights issues are our priority and to ensure that the people, in particular the displaced population, have equal access to justice and to basic services including clean water, education and health care," said Ms. Altinay. Ibrahim Abaker, General Secretary at El Fasher Cultural Center, which houses the library noted that, the project will improve the standard of the library and serve as a learning and training center for our boys and girls, kids and even the elderly in the community.'' EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, April 2, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- UNAMID Media Brief /1 April 2012 Darfur university graduates sign peace pledge More than 600 students from El Fasher University in North Darfur celebrated their graduation today with the signing of a Pledge for Peace in a ceremony organized jointly by the institution and UNAMID. According to Mr. Ahmed Abdul Aziz Abdul Kaibir, a member of the civil society, "how can they return when there are widespread arms and the militias are roaming about with their guns?" Mr. Gibril said that the reports JSR Gambari has received have been "very encouraging in terms of the large numbers of ordinary Darfurians flocking to the dissemination workshops," and that the people "have expressed a strong wave of enthusiastic support for any constructive initiative that would assure decisive peace, stability and sustainable socioeconomic recovery." The celebration included a carnival, a football match, a horse race and an official ceremony held on 04 February where trophies and medals were awarded to winners and participants in the various activities. In collaboration with the North Darfur Minister for Education, UNAMID also equipped in El Fasher a computer training centre for secondary school teachers and students, which can accommodate up to 100 persons. The play pump, designed by South-African nonprofit organization Roundabout Water Solutions, consists of a special merry-go-round that when spun drives water from an underground borehole into a tank. The skills training included comprehensive guidelines for efficiently managing land and water resources to create optimum benefits for communities of different sizes. Professor Gambari urged the students to familiarize themselves with the peace document which is currently under implementation in Darfur and the subject of dozens of community workshops across the region: "The parties (to the agreement) must continue their efforts and increase the pace to bring the tangible dividends of peace to all Darfuris," he said. The solution lies in engaging all the communities' components in power and asset sharing and...the need to increasing the living standards for all of our people... with job opportunities to all Darfuris and equal share of services to all areas. By signing this action plan, the LJM has committed to end any recruitment and use of child soldiers; release all children found within its ranks; fully cooperate with the Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Commission; take measures to prevent the recruitment and re-recruitment of children; designate a senior-level focal point to interact with the UN; and, grant full access to UN teams for the monitoring of compliance and submit periodic progress reports on implementation. Ms. Halima Tibin Bosh, the North Darfur Wali's (Governor) Advisor on Women and Child Affairs and the Deputy Chairperson for the North Darfur State Committee on SGBV, noted that the seminar will strengthen women legislators' role in the State Legislative Council and enhance their capacity in promoting and protecting human rights of women and girls in North Darfur. |
