| Summary: | This article explores the rules, characteristics and developments of narrative images from the earliest Western theoretical discourse, with the publication of Leon Battista’s De Pictura in 1435, to the beginnings of the neoclassical analysis, with Jacques-Louis David’s arrival in Rome in 1775. By following changes in both the forms of visual representation and theoretical discourse, the author seeks to reintegrate the questions addressed into a contemporary historiographical perspective. While the narrative image remains difficult to define, it can nonetheless be assimilated to any image that produces a story. Thus, literary theory and the development of narratology provide an appropriate conceptual framework for thinking about narrative in the visual arts. |
