Here, Everett provides a Kantian account of the rationality of scientific theory change. The question of how it can be rational to abandon an established conceptual framework in favor of a new one has been a central concern in the philosophy of science since Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions--however, the problem is particularly sharp for Kantian approaches to the philosophy of science for two reasons: first, for Kant, the constitutive principles that ground the objectivity of science are necessary (and true for all time) and, second, there is no external concept of truth that can be appealed to in order to explain the rationality of abandoning one theory for another. In this spirit, Everett focuses on one small period in the development of space-time theories: the period from 1907-1913. Prior to 1907, gravity had been modeled as a field in three-dimensional space.
