Other applications are briefly surveyed.< >
The main ideas behind the parallel logic programming language, PARLOG, are presented by comparing the language with Prolog; some knowledge of Prolog and of the concepts of logic programming is assumed. Illustrations for 2 main areas of PARLOG, systems programming and object-oriented programming, are given. Parallel logic programming languages fit naturally in the object-oriented style of programming in which information and the methods for manipulating and accessing the information are encapsulated in an object. An object can be represented in PARLOG as a tail recursive process, which takes an input stream of messages sent by other objects. Other applications for PARLOG -- such as simulation, specification of concurrent systems, expert systems, and language parsing -- are presented. PARLOG is currently being used by the PARLOG research group at Imperial College to run C implementation on Sun workstations, and a parallel implementation on a 6-processor, shared-memory machine is being developed.
