| Abstract | Oral and maxillofacial space infection is a suppurative inflammation involving the underlying fascial spaces of the maxillofacial, peri-maxillofacial, and oropharyngeal regions. Its cure rate can be improved ultimately by integrating relevant experience in rapid preoperative diagnosis and airway maintenance in our hospital.
A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data from 61 patients with severe multiple space infections who were admitted to our department within one year. This study also analyzed the association between airway compression and lower respiratory tract infections.
1. The duration of tracheal intubation was a relevant factor for lower respiratory tract infections. There was significantly higher infection rate with the prolongation of the duration of intubation in case of more severe airway compression. 2. Lower respiratory tract infections were associated with the degree of airway compression. 3. Postoperative evaluation indicated that early tracheal extubation within 24-48 h after surgery could reduce the occurrence of lower respiratory tract infections.
This study suggests that timely establishment of respiratory protection and early active surgery are the most significant interventions for controlling severe infections. |
