| Abstract | Software management is considered from the corporate headquarters viewpoint. This perspective encompasses all facets of management, but specifically dealt with are those that are brought to bear on software management obstacles and ways to cope with them are presented. Standardization is presented as the most effective management device available at the corporate level for enhancing the overall software posture. Corporate management actions available for favorably influencing the quality of software over its life cycle and research initiatives are described. |

| AbstractList | Corporate level software managers are faced with various obstacles and pitfalls that are educational and/or psychological difficulties more than they are technical ones. The lack of computer related experience by corporate decision makers is probably the biggest obstacle facing software managers. A general lack of available computer oriented expertise within the labor force has made it necessary to provide projects with all the crutches and help possible. A third obstacle is the hardware orientations of the industry, because it came first and is deeply entrenched. Software is relatively new and intangible. Many positive things can be done to improve the management of software. Corporate headquarters is in a good position to constructively influence the future evolution of software management. Standardization is probably the most powerful management tool that corporate level management has. It is especially effective in some areas: 1. hardware devices, 2. interfaces, 3. programming languages, 4. computer program documentation, 5. support software, and 6. programming standards and conventions. Software management is considered from the corporate headquarters viewpoint. This perspective encompasses all facets of management, but specifically dealt with are those that are brought to bear on software management obstacles and ways to cope with them are presented.
