| Shrnutí: | Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective process for waste management, pollution mitigation, renewable energy utilization, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. However, low temperature is one of the most limiting factors for the application of AD in many cold regions. To expand the applications of AD to larger areas in the world, many studies have been conducted to explore its potential under low-temperature conditions. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review on recent progresses and findings in this field. The generation and management of manure in cold regions are summarized to demonstrate the potential capacity of AD. Advancements in theories and technologies that can improve the performance of anaerobic digestion in cold regions are thoroughly reviewed. The benefits of AD applications in terms of emission reduction are evaluated at global scale.
