| AbstractList | Production costs of electricity vary according to both long-term and short-term factors. Some long-term factors include seasonal loading and scheduled equipment outages. Short-term factors include extreme climatic conditions and forced equipment outages. In other words, electricity, as a commodity, is very much the subject to the economic concepts of supply and demand. A more desirable pricing scheme for electricity would allow for a variable sale price dependent upon the spot price of power at any instant in time. This type of pricing scheme has been given the name variable spot pricing (VSP). The VSP tariff allows the price of electricity to reflect variable production costs. Consumers may elect to modify their use of electricity during peak conditions, thereby reducing peak demand and minimizing their cost of electricity. This paper presents a microprocessor based system for the implementation of VSP of electricity.
