Abstract Cette contribution se base sur les résultats d’une enquête ethnographique sur les pratiques pédagogiques visant à favoriser l’autonomie des élèves à l’école primaire. Elle aborde les spécificités des outils pédagogiques utilisés dans les classes observées, les activités intellectuelles qu’ils exigent et les dispositions qu’ils sollicitent. Elle traite de la pluralité des usages effectifs de ces outils par les élèves, en considérant en particulier les usages considérés comme « déviants » par les enseignants. Les catégories de déviance sont alors analysées comme autant d’indices de l’existence de compétences prérequises par les outils, qui, parce qu’elles ne sont pas explicitement objectivées et transmises, contribuent à la constitution d’inégalités sociales dans les premiers degrés de la scolarité.
