| Abstract | Rifa‘at ‘Ali Abou-El-Haj (1933-2022), a scholar of the Early Modern Ottoman Empire, completed a Ph.D. in Princeton University’s Departments of Oriental Studies and History in 1963. A key member of a generation of scholars who challenged a Euro-American dominated academy and its study of the Middle East, Dr. Abou-El-Haj spent the majority of his teaching career at California State University, Long Beach. For over 50 year, Abou-El-Haj critically engaged scholars working on the early modern Ottoman state and society via publications such as The 1703 Rebellion and the Structure of Ottoman Politics (Leiden: Brill, 1984; translated into Turkish in 2011) and Formation of the Modern State: The Ottoman Empire, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (Albany: SUNY University Press, (1991; in translated into Turkish in 2018) |

Erken modern dönem Osmanlı İmparatorluğu üzerine çalışan Rifa‘at ‘Ali Abou-El-Haj (1933-2022), doktorasını 1963 yılında Princeton Üniversitesi Şarkiyat Çalışmaları ve Tarih bölümlerinde tamamladı. Avrupa-Amerika hakimiyetindeki akademik ortam ve Ortadoğu çalışmaları alanında yeni bir meydan okuma teşkil eden akademisyen neslinin önemli bir temsilcisi olan Abou-El-Haj, elli yılı aşkın bir zaman, erken modern dönem Osmanlı İmparatorluğu üzerine çalışan tarihçileri eleştirel çalışmaları ve bilhassa 1703 İsyanı-Osmanlı Siyasasının Yapısı (1984; Türkçe çevirisi 2011) ve Modern Devletin Doğası: 16. yüzyıldan 18. yüzyıla Osmanlı İmparatorluğu (1991; Türkçe çevirisi 2018) başlıklı kitaplarıyla Osmanlı devlet ve toplumu hakkkında tekrar düşünmeye sevk etti. Rifa‘at ‘Ali Abou-El-Haj, a scholar of the Early Modern Ottoman Empire, passed away in Brooklyn, New York on March 14, 2022. Beloved huband to Barbara Abou-El- Haj (d. 2015), brother of Asia, Hidayet, Samira, and Amal; uncle to Thea Abou-El-Haj, Nadia Abou-El-Haj, and Tabatha Abou-El-Haj; mentor to many. He was 89.
