| Abstract | Sustainability is of course a topic and goal of intimidating size. Addressing all its aspects would require a team far larger than ours and would be well-beyond the scope of our article. However, the key tenets of leadership can be applied to waste management within the overall field of sustainability. The management of physical waste is an interesting topic to address from a leadership perspective because it is carried out by every individual frontline healthcare worker multiple times a day, with policy made at local and national levels. As such, we should use leadership principles or frameworks aimed at all staff and take into account their personal responsibilities as executors of the NHS’ sustainability goals. |

| AbstractList | Sustainability is of course a topic and goal of intimidating size. Correspondence to Nick Eynon-Lewis, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK; nicholas.eynonlewis@nhs.net A couple of years on from the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a strategy shift in health policy from containment of COVID-19 to, as the title of the government’s COVID-19 response guidance document published in February 2022 by the Cabinet Office would suggest, ‘Living with COVID-19’.1 Restrictions on day-to-day life for UK citizens are comparatively minimal, and the legal requirement for an individual who has tested positive to isolate has now ended. Front-line healthcare workers are still subject to isolation guidance and still required to don PPE (personal protective equipment) with each individual patient contact. The management of physical waste is an interesting topic to address from a leadership perspective because it is carried out by every individual frontline healthcare worker multiple times a day, with policy made at local and national levels. Step 4: evaluating impact: audit, carbon footprint, cost–benefit analysis Any implemented changes should be evaluated in terms of its effectiveness at reducing waste, an evaluation which can be in as much depth as calculation of carbon footprint. |
