| Popis: | Keywords: Artificial Life, Evolution, SelfReplicating Programs, Embryology, Development, Multicellularity, Parallel Programs Introduction This paper describes a system that has been developed to study the open-ended evolution of parallel computer programs. The system is called COSMOS (standing for COmpetitive Self-replicating Multicellular Organisms in Software), and, as the name implies, it has been designed primarily to explore the analogy between parallel computer programs and multicellular biological organisms. The motivations for creating the system are discussed, followed by a brief overview of its features. Some preliminary results are then presented, followed by a discussion and suggestions for future experiments. Motivations for building COSMOS Our understanding of the evolution of living organisms, and attempts to derive general theories of evolution, are hampered by the fact that we only have one example of life to study---life on Earth. There are therefore many situations. |
