Beschreibung: – In his main work, De Regno (1600), William Barclay refuted the theories of those he termed ‘monarchomachs’ of both Calvinist and Catholic origin. On the contrary, he valued the Pauline theory of obedience to authority, considering the political powers unquestionable by any subjects. In De Potestate Pape (published posthumously by his son John) Barclay confronted Bellarmine’s theory of papal ‘plenitudo potetatis’. Here, he defended the distinction and autonomy of spiritual and temporal authorities and he contrasted hierocratic thought with a different conception of royal power, drawn not only from law but also and above all from the Bible and the history of the origins of Christianity. This ‘return to the origins’ would have saved the solidity of the State and the purity of the Church from its Gregorian ‘contamination’.
