Attention is paid to the farming technology, in particular grazing and housing, which are factors that distinguish alternative breeds from conventional ones. The importance of indigenous breeds for rural develop-ment is also outlined. The economic part of the paper compares the retail prices of pork of selected alternative breeds and conventional meat hybrids. The importance of alternative breeds is summarised in the final part of the thesis.
