In the second half of the 16th century, the tomb monuments of Austrian and Hungarian noblemen started to include elements that broke away from the tradition of medieval effigies and brought them closer to contemporary portraiture. Some monuments that exemplify this new approach are the tomb of Hans Rueber Pixendorf (†1584) from the Košice Cathedral of St Elisabeth (today stored at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest) or the tomb of Miklós Pálffy II (†1600) from the Bratislava Cathedral of St Martin. The paper analyses the reception of this new visual model in continental Croatia among the high and lesser nobility (the tombs of Tamás Erdődy II (†1624) in Zagreb, Benedicto Thuróczy (†1616) in Vinica, János Pethő de Gerse IV (†1616) in Ivanec, and Vragović family member in Maruševec) and its underlying symbolic meaning. |
