Beschreibung: This chapter provides an overview of the discipline of Terminology with emphasis on applied terminology work in the context of multilingual EU law. The first part of the chapter outlines specialized language and defines the principal categories of term, concept and object observed through the lens of specialized translation. Focus is put on state-of-the-art approaches to term formation and standardization as well as on multilingual terminology work with an eye to EU translation. The second part of the chapter explains the unique features of EU terms that are applied both by EU courts and national courts of the Member States. This dual environment in which EU terms are used, applied and interpreted increases the need for consistency and multilingual concordance of terms. The chapter also illustrates examples from the institutional terminology database IATE and offers guidelines for credible information retrieval for EU translators, underscoring terminology work as a pre-condition for EU accession.
