Popis: The mayors of the liberal era in Austrian cities, who insisted on legislation, were faced with new tasks in organising their cities: the water and gas supply, the sewage system or the hygiene of the cities had to be newly regulated against the background of dynamic urbanisation. This so-called assanitation of urban spaces presented the city governments with great financial challenges, and a large indebtedness of the cities was the result. The example of a total of seven mayors of the Austrian cities of Graz, Linz and Vienna from the liberal era (1859–1873) illustrates the changed framework conditions after the bourgeois revolution of 1848. The establishment of political municipalities also meant that the cities had to increasingly take care of health care and hospitals, but also of the cities’ horse drawn omnibuses.
