| Popis: | This article examines the role of dogs in Rio de Janeiro between the late 19th and early 20thcenturies, a period of intense urban and sanitary transformations. As the city modernized underPereira Passos’ reforms, dogs were increasingly seen not only as companions and urban workers butalso as a threat to public health. The creation of the carrocinha – a state-run vehicle for capturingstray dogs – symbolized a shift in human-dog relations, reflecting the growing control over animalsin urban spaces. Lima Barreto’s 1919 chronicle, "A Carroça dos Cachorros", offers a satiricalcritique of these policies and the impact of state repression on dogs and their owners. Throughliterature and historical records, this study seeks to understand the social and cultural implicationsof the persecution of dogs in the modern city, and how these animals were represented in thecollective imagination of Rio de Janeiro. |
