В рецензии раскрывается вклад британского историка Энтони Кросса в изучение культурной памяти англичан о Петре Великом. Показано, что в его книге «Английский Петр. Петр Великий глазами британцев XVII–XX веков» собран уникальный письменный и иконографической материал и воссоздана эволюция собирательного образа России, русских и Петра I в представлениях англичан с 1698 г. до современности. Особое внимание уделено специфике «английского взгляда» на Россию, отмеченного преобладанием негативных коннотаций образа «великого царя-реформатора варварской и дикой России» в британской культуре Нового времени. Выявляется троп превосходства британцев на протяжении XVIII–XIX вв. Показано, что переоценка Петра и России происходит лишь в научной петрографии ХХ в., а труд Э. Кросса вносит серьезный вклад в преодоление раздвоенности культурной памяти англичан между популярным мифом и историческим Петром. The review reveals the contribution of the great British historian E. Cross to the research of the cultural memory of the Englishmen about Peter the Great (Кросс Э. Английский Петр. Петр Великий глазами британцев XVII-XX веков. М.: Европейский Дом. 2013. 230 с., илл.). The author shows that E. Cross has managed to collect unique written and iconographic material and recreate the evolution of the collective image of Russia, Russians and Peter I in the representations of the British from 1698 to the present. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the “English view” on Russia, marked by the predominance of negative connotations of the “great reformer king of barbarous and wild Russia” in the British culture of modern times, and discovers the path of British supremacy during the 18th – 19th centuries. It is shown that the reappraisal of Peter and Russia occurs only in the scientific petrography of the 20th century, and the E. Cross’s analysis of the cultural memory of the Englishmen is a serious contribution to overcoming the duality between the popular myth and the historical Peter.
