Beschreibung: В статье исследуется и сравнивается реакция литературной критики и читателей на один из самых заметных романов о «новых людях» 1860-1870-х гг. - «Шаг за шагом» И.В. Омулевского. Анализируются рецензии, а также свидетельства молодых интеллигентов 1870-1890-х гг., выявляются разнообразные оценки произведения и некоторые практики его чтения. Делается вывод о том, что литературное сообщество встретило роман прохладно, не приняв художественную сторону и тенденциозную идеализацию «новых людей», тогда как среди читателей он имел успех. Несмотря на то, что читатели могли замечать те же недостатки романа, что и критики, для большей части аудитории они не были важны - в первую очередь молодых людей привлекали идейные мотивы произведения. Роман использовался для революционной пропаганды в кружках и активно читался вплоть до начала XX в. The article examines and compares the reaction of literary critics and readers to one of the most famous novels about “new people” of the 1860-1870s - “Step by Step” by I.V. Omulevsky. The reviews and the evidences of young intellectuals of the 1870s-1890s are analyzed, and various assessments of the work are revealed. It is concluded that the literary community greeted the novel coolly, not accepting the artistic side and tendentious idealization of “new people”, but the readership reacted to the novel sympathetically. Despite the fact that readers could notice the same shortcomings of the work as the critics, for most of the audience they were unimportant - they were primarily attracted by the ideological side of the work. The novel was used for revolutionary propaganda in circles and was actively read until the beginning of the 20th century.
