Abstrakt: A cross-section (XS) tabulation method is indispensable to address the practical issue of efficient and accurate treatment of macroscopic XSs in an LWR core transient analysis code and apply the high-fidelity method to simulate core transient behaviors in the actual heterogeneous core geometry. A new macroscopic XS tabulation method based on the kernel method is proposed. The method was incorporated into RYUHO, which is a prototypic planar method of characteristics-based core transient analysis code, to preliminarily investigate the applicability of the method using benchmark calculations in a PWR-UO2 fuel pin-cell geometry. The macroscopic XSs were tabulated for state variables based on the kernel method, where the polynomial kernel was used as the kernel function. The proposed method reproduced the fission and absorption macroscopic XSs below 1.0% of the absolute value of the relative difference. However, it was about 2.5% in maximum for the up-scattering macroscopic XS. The absolute value of the relative difference of the k-infinity and the difference of the reactivity change from the nominal state condition between the reference and reproduced macroscopic XS-based results were below 50 pcm. Consequently, the proposed method was deemed applicable for the efficient and accurate treatment of macroscopic XSs in heterogeneous regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
