| Abstract: | The article focuses on the incidence and characteristics of hallucinations and disturbed behavior in critically ill patients, utilizing natural language processing (NLP) for real-time detection. A study conducted in three medical-surgical ICUs from July 2016 to May 2022 found that 8.31% of 7,525 patients experienced hallucinations, predominantly visual, often emerging within the first three days of ICU admission. The study revealed associations between hallucinations and increased use of antipsychotic medications and ketamine, although there were no significant differences in hospital or 28-day mortality rates. The findings suggest that hallucinations may indicate a specific neurocognitive dysfunction related to critical illness, highlighting the potential for NLP to enhance research and interventions in this area.
