Simulating crowd behaviour to implement safety-based urban design techniques aimed at optimizing evacuation

Predmety: The paper describes research that addresses the issue of evacuation after a disaster event concerning the optimization of urban shape through the combination of simulations and safety-based urban design techniques. The methodology covers the following steps: the setting up of the knowledge system, the realization of software for the simulation of crowd behaviour, the choice of the case study, the application of software to the assessment of alternative safety-based scenarios. The main results demonstrate the great utility of software simulation tools combined with the application of urban design techniques, aimed at improving urban contexts and their structural resilience

Multiscale modeling is a key tool for developing effective techniques to describethese phenomena, which may otherwise be computationally intractable. Specifically, assuming scale-separation in mod-els allows us to examine the interplay between processes active on vastly different length and time scales, defining, forexample, phenomena on macroscales and microscales [13, 53]. In most practically relevant cases, the microscalesare active in the sense that they are hosting localized phase transitions described mathematically by moving interfaceswith a priori known or unknown velocities. The case of known interface velocities is both mathematically and computa-tionally well-understood (cf. e.g., [10]), while the case of unknown interface velocities is still a matter of concern, compare[11, 55] for some very recent asymptotic analysis results concerning closely related reaction-diffusion scenarioswhich arise in the context of reactive transport in porous media.Here, we consider a flow process that takes place on two distinct physical scales. Social capital as a driving force for accessible tourism

Predmety: People with disabilities face environmental, economic, informational and intrinsic barriers that affect their choice of tourism goods by inducing a self-selection problem. This problem may generate a biased measure of their tourism participation probability. Given this consideration, the aim of the present study is twofold. First, the theoretical impact of barriers on tourism choices for a person with disabilities and how such barriers can generate a self-selection problem are presented. Second, the role of social capital in reducing these barriers is investigated. A Heckman selection model is employed to verify and address these issues using microdata concerning the Italian population. The results show the importance of social capital, through bridging and linking networks, in reducing the barriers to tourism participation
